E3: School Effectiveness

 

School education affects the type of job that one can receive. It is important for colleges and employers to be on the same page of what is expected from students going into the work field. After reviewing the websites that held information on what European and Connecticut employers expect from their employees, it seemed that both wanted employers with a higher education.

The first website was from the European Commission. The website states, “It provides insights into the needs and perceptions of graduate recruiters by monitoring the opinions of staff in companies throughout Europe with at least 50 employees across a range of business sectors.” (European Commission 2010) Through their research it was found that companies are hiring higher educated graduates. They also are looking for employees with their bachelor’s degree. This shows that companies are finding that employees need to have a higher education background to best serve their company. This information should be available and shown to students so that they can become serious about their education. Almost ¼ of the people surveyed said that they have dealt with people in or from other countries. Many people have the opportunity to work with others from other countries. This provides these employees with the opportunity to communicate internationally. Companies are currently working with institutions to discuss curriculum design and study programs. This will allow the institutions and the companies to be on the same page as to what they are looking for in jobs. In return it helps the students become more ready for their future jobs.

The second and third websites were the CT Business and Industry Association from 2008 and 2011. The first survey showed that CT businesses were all about innovation, quality and productivity. They are struggling to produce these because they have a shortage of skilled workers. One reason why they have a shortage of skilled workers is because there is a decreasing population of young people at the same time that the baby boomer generation is retiring. We have too many people of the older generation retiring as we do not have as many young people coming into the work field. The second reason is due to high living costs. Many students have to live on their own or leave with roommates after they finish high school. With these high demanding living costs sometimes eliminates students from being able to attend college or to finish college. If students are unable to complete college then they have a less chance of receiving the better jobs. The third reason is the state’s education system did not prepare students for the job market. It has been found that the institutions are not teaching the students everything that companies are looking for. The fourth reason is transportation issues. Students have trouble getting to school and even work. If they do not have transportation then they are less worried about going to school or more worried about going to their job and making money. The second survey showed that there are higher tech school graduates over traditional school graduates. This may be due to the fact that these students from tech schools leave high school with a trade. These students may not need to go to college right away. They are more likely to receive a job in their trade and be able to complete their college education while working in their trade. There is little difference between community colleges and state colleges. It is shown that students are receiving the same education whether they are going to community college or a state college. In order for students to receive their bachelor’s degree, students will have to go to a state college in the end, but they can receive their associate’s degree at a community college. Internships and on-the-job training could improve graduates’ job readiness. When students have these training it shows the students exactly what to expect when they go into the work field. It also will show the students what they need to do to receive their job that they want. CT’s manufactures are concerned about lack of basic math and writing skills. Schools need to make sure that students are receiving these basic skills because they are very important to their future work.

The fourth website was the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It showed that the more education a person has the more money they tend to make. People with no diploma hold the highest unemployment rate. One feature that I found on the website that was very interesting was the student resources. These resources include career exploration, economy information, maps, glossary and charts and tables. These are great resources for students that will prepare them for the work field.

After reviewing all of the websites it is clear that European and CT employers expect very similar skills and education from their employees. They expect their employees to have attended college and they look for employees with their bachelor’s degree. It is important for companies and state institutions to be on the same page about what their students need to learn. It is a good idea that companies and state institutions work together in creating curriculum design and study programs.

E2: Social Barometers

 

Social barometers deals with social behaviors and norms in a particular social situation. After reviewing the websites that highlighted these social barometers, I found a multitude of positives that come from these social barometers. The social barometers that I focused on were Center for Intercultural Dialogue, The Anna Lindh Foundation, The Gallup Organization, Afrobarometer, and Latin American barometer. Each one of these sources has something positive to share.

The Center for Intercultural Dialogue is a website designed to provide researchers’ work to allow others to communicate and collaborate on this work. Intercultural communicate is a big emphasis for this website. Work from researchers all around the world are on this website. This allows others to read their work and potentially collaborate with them on their work. Some of the activities that they promote are grants for cultural research, clearinghouse for communication scholars, and events that they cohost.

The Anna Lindh Foundation produces a report every three years that aids people with proposals for intercultural dialogue and action. The website states, “People living in societies in Europe and in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region are suffering from a distorted and stereotyped perception of each other, according to a ground-breaking report on the challenges of human and cultural relations in the Region.” This shows that people are not willing to work or even interact with others from different regions. This could go as far as the students not wanting to work together during school. This could affect their education deeply. Many times educators have students work together in order to accomplish an assignment. This not only is for students to interact with each other, but it also is to collaborate their ideas with one another. Many times if students are struggling with a concept that the teacher has taught in a particular way, they may learn it from a student that sees how to learn the concept in a different way. There were multiple proposals that the researchers came up with to help eliminate this in these regions. Some of the proposals were investing in education for intercultural learning, supporting the potential of media for improving knowledge and respect, supporting the intercultural dimension within the urban space, and developing tools for an improved quality of interaction. They believe by implementing these proposals that it will aid the intercultural dialogue and action in these regions.

The Gallup Organization provided research about the intercultural dialogue in Europe. After reading through the research, it was stated that they believe that people with different backgrounds enrich the cultural life. It was also stated that the younger generation is contacting with others from around the world more than the older generation. This may be contributed to the use of technology. It may not appear to be such an odd thing to the older generation if it didn’t use technology where most of the older generation do not use technology.

The Afrobarometer measures the atmosphere of Africa. It conducts surveys with 35 African countries that are produced on a regular basis. This website provides reader with information pertaining to Africa through videos, articles and news. This allows people from all over the world to be in the know about what is going on in Africa. For education purposes, students can complete research from this website and can find interesting ideas that they could relate to an African student. From this teachers can set up a classroom to classroom or a student to student chat where students can communicate with students from Africa.

The Latin American barometer provides an opinion survey that is held in 18 Latin American countries. It produces and publicizes the data that is received. On this website, one can find news, data banks, documents and online data analysis. This information can be used to encourage people to communicate with others around the world more often.

After reviewing the websites, they all have positives ways to encourage intercultural communication. Many aspects of these websites can be used in classrooms. Teachers can use information off of these websites, depending on the grade level, to encourage their students to talk with other students around the world. This is a great way for students to talk about the similarities and differences between their schools. This could lead to students wanted to study abroad and get involved with other countries. The one big difference I found on these websites was that most people provided on the surveys that they did not communicate with other races and cultures. I found that this was surprising that more people did not communicate nor did they want to do so. I believe if we encourage intercultural communication more in our schools that our students will grow up having this exposure and will be more willingly to do so.

The website provides the ability for scholars to learn about the work of international peers, find research and collaborate with others.

The website has accurate information due to the fact that there are researchers’ profiles and publications on all of the information provided through this website. The researchers are not just random people they chose to put on the website, they are true researchers and some of their previous work is shown and highlighted in their profiles.

The website provides research on the development of societies, democracy and economies by using attitudes, behaviors and values from surveys.

The website provides accurate information because the information is backed up by researchers and publications.

The website has accurate information because it is a published report that many highly qualified experts were part of. The website provides all of the experts with profiles about their work for this report and previous work they have completed.

The website has accurate information because it provides the dates and by whom the research was produced by. It provides an introduction providing all of this information for the readers.

 

 

 

 

E1: International Connections

E1: International Connections

Students can form connections with other students all across the world. This has been made easier with the use of technology. After reviewing these websites, I have found technology aids for students and teachers to communicate, ways to provide students to become excited in making international connections and have learned the importance of providing students ways to make these international connections.

The first website that I visited was epals.com. This website provides students, teachers and faculty the opportunity to communicate with others from around the world. There are multiple discussion boards on this website that you can read and respond to. While I was exploring the website, I found a discussion board titled “We are ePals.” In this discussion board, there were multiple smaller discussions. I chose to look into “what is your favorite subject in school?” I chose math and came to find out that that was the most liked subject in schools. I found this surprising because many students say that they dislike math. For this particular discussion board, students could seek out other peers that enjoy the same subjects as them. The students could also talk to each other about what they are learning, how they are learning the subject, and what the enjoy most about the subject. I think this is a great way for students to connect to one another and to enforce their love for certain subjects.

The next website that I visited was techlearning.com. This website provided a slideshow focusing on Global Pedagogy. This method of teaching focuses on the mindset of the students and teacher. In order to fulfill this, you need to bring outside experiences into the classroom, collaborate with one another, and sharing your work and experiences. Technology is a useful aid in order for students to collaborate with others from all around the world. Some examples that this website provided were student blogs and transmedia story telling. I personally found the transmedia story telling very amusing. This is because people tell stories in many different ways. If students are able to hear these stories from different readers, then the students will have a broader experience in order to become proficient readers and writers. This story telling also provides students with stories that they might not be familiar with or have access to. Different cultures have different stories and through this transmedia story telling students can be exposed to all kinds of stories.

The last website that I found interesting and helpful was the U.S. Department of Education. This website provides a multitude of resources not only for teachers but also for students. One resource that I found to be very useful and helpful was GEM. GEM stands for Global Education Motivators. GEM can be used by students, teachers and staff to provide knowledge pertaining to other people and their cultures. These knowledge is presented in workshops where people can come together or share the experience using technology. GEM provides videoconferencing which would be very helpful for students, teachers and staff. While I was student teaching last semester, my host teacher used a videoconferencing source for the students. The students were able to communicate with another classroom. When they met, they typically had a topic to discuss and the students had produce a presentation for the other class. At the end of both presentations the students and teachers asked questions about their presentation. I found that the students were very intrigued in this program and I would definitely use it in my own classroom.
